Roger Bannister is famous in the track world. He was the first person to run a mile (1.6 kilometers) in less than four minutes. When asked, fifty years later, if he felt this achievement was his greatest, he replied, "No." After a
relatively short running career, Bannister finished medical school. He became a neurologist. To Bannister,
neurology was an important science. Once he retired from running, his career in neurology became his focus. He
made advances in his research. He also co-wrote the standard medical text on neurology. Bannister felt his
medical achievements were more important than his track records.
