Why was lew wallace brought to new mexico as a replacement governor

General Lew Wallace brought in as governor to fix things. He was to quiet the Lincoln County War, capture Billy the Kid, and restore order to New Mexico. Lew Wallace offered amnesty to Billy the Kid and when Wallace was not true to his word, Billy the Kid threatened to “ride into the plaza…put a bullet through Lew Wallace." Eventually Billy the Kid was killed, but Lew Wallace was discouraged with New Mexico's lawlessness. After 3 years he resigned. His wife quoted as saying “General Sherman was right. We should have another war with Old Mexico to make her take back New Mexico.”
