Why did scholars name an early hominid group homo habilis, which means “handy man”?

Homo Habilis was an homo species that existed on Earth approximately between 2.1 and 1.5 million years ago. In the evolutive process, this species stands chronologically between the Australopithecus and the Homo erectus.

Such denomination was applied because they constituted the first civilization in human history, for whom the elaboration and use of flaked stone tools was proved.
