How did the climate in the southern colonies influence life expectancy, family life, immigration, and economic development?

- The climate was very swampy and warm.
- Malarial mosquitoes infested the region causing many diseases that lead to the shortage in the lifespan of the people who lived in this region.

- Most of the settlers were men who were both young and single. However, many of them died as a result of the overload of work, the malnutrition or the diseases that spread in the region. Those who survived these conditions had to crave for the very few women who were available when compared to the number of men.
- This lead to a difficulty in establishing family life and increased the number of unmarried pregnancies.
- This also lead in a difficulty in increasing the population.

- As a result of the climate, men died leaving women (widows) variety of properties. Therefore, women in these regions had more property rights than women in northern colonies.

- In order to sustain the population that wasn't increasing because of previously mentioned reasons, immigration was the only possible way.

- The economy of this region was mainly depending on tobacco which was the one crop that could grow in this region and survive its climate. So, the whole economy of the region was shaped around the planting and harvesting of tobacco.
