It is a system where the minority of fields are in cultivation and the majority are in various stages of natural re-growth. Fields are being cultivated for a relatively short time and, once they yield crops, abandoned and allowed to recover ( fallow ) for a relatively long time. The longer a field is cropped, the faster it degrades and loses its soil organic matter, the field becomes acid and porous.
