The people living in Boston at the time were pretty savage. They didn't tar and feather just *anyone*. They targeted British tax collectors because they just didn't want them to collect their taxes. They hated the fact that Britain had forced them to pay taxes without any of their consent. S they went for violent methods and not only tarred and feathered the tax collectors, but they also poured hot boiling tea into their throats- forcing them to resign out of fear. Eventually this violence spread out to the other colonies and in no time, not a single tax collector existed in America.
