The Jamestown Colonists were forced to farm tobacco by a man called John Smith. He took control of the settlements. Colonists who neglected their work were flogged or hung. Indentured servants were required to help farm the land. They were imported from England and work for about seven years before they were freed. The Powhatan and the colonists fought over land - the colonists wanted more land. Eventually, the Powhatan raiders raided Jamestown and killed more than 340 colonists. The planters were slaves who were subjected to harsh treatment.
