Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic. Santo Domingo is located at the mouth of Ozama River, on the southeast coast of Hispaniola island. Santo Domingo is the oldest permanent Europian settlement city in the Western Hemisphere. Other than that, Santo Domingo is also known as the oldest Roman Catholic archbishopric that is located in America.

At first, Santo Domingo was founded by Bartholomew Colombus in 1496. Bartholomew Colombus was the brother of Christopher Colombus. When first was found, the original site of Santo Domingo was at the left bank of the Ozama River. It was first called Nueva Isabela to honor Queen Isabella I of Spain.  

The place was then destroyed by a big hurricane. In 1502, the place was rebuilt and the present location is in the right bank of Ozama River. The place has become a starting point for most exploration and expeditions of the Spanish. The Spanish also do conquest on other islands of the adjacent mainland and West Indies.  

Santo Domingo is the main commercial, financial, and industrial center of the country. The industrial development of the country is highly influenced by the construction of hydroelectric dams. The whole country's most important industry is metallurgy, and it is located in Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo’s economy has grown in the late 20th century because of their tourism.
