"Jane Roe" was a pseudonym used for the court case. The actual name of the woman at the center of the case (as revealed much later) was Norma McCovey, who was a resident of Texas, Texas law allowed for abortion "”for the purpose of saving the life of the mother," but not for other reasons. [It might be noted that this was common in many states, and well-to-do women could generally find a doctor who would certify that their mental/emotional health was too fragile to go through with childbirth. So the abortion laws tended to discriminate against those with less resources and connections.]

Attorneys for "Jane Roe" filed suit against the state law, with Dallas County District Attorney named as the defendant to represent the state of Texas.

The case ultimately did become about rights to privacy and the 9th Amendment, but the initial reason for filing the case was simply a challenge to the constitutionality of the state's abortion law.
