Japan’s attack on Hawaii was a strategic move because Hawaii was where a large portion of the Pacific fleet was sheltered.

By attackng Hawaii, Japan was seeking to destroy significant American fleet units, and thus to prevent the Pacific Fleet from interfering with their desired conquest of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Furthermore, it would enable Japan to conquer Southeast Asia easily.
