The Montgomery movement propelled Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. to the leadership of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s. Blacks never had the same rights White people had; they were discriminated against in a host of institutions and public amenities—schools, hospitals rest rooms etc. The movement began when a black woman in Alabama called Rosa Parks who was arrested because she refused to give up her seat to a white man. There had been a law that forbids blacks from sitting at the front if there were no seats for whites. As a result, blacks no longer wanted started boycotting public buses.
