Indian Wars

Explanation:

The Indian Wars happened throughout the 18th century. They began when the US government bought the territory of Lousiana from France in 1803. However, the confrontation came to total war in 1848, when the current California and New Mexico were conquered.

The Indian Wars had no mass confrontation between regular armies, as the tribes had no regular armies and although they were living the same fate of being conquered, they rarely fought together against  white men and their defense was decided locally by the chief of each tribe.

The main Indian tribes in conflict were the Sioux, the Cheyennes, the Apaches, Shoshones and Comanches.

The Indian tactic of rapid attacks and by surprise using their knowledge of the environment made the conflict lengthen for almost 90 years. The list of extermination of entire tribes was massive: Ash Hollow, Sand Creek, Fetterman or the most brutal of Wounded Knee (1890) where the last Sioux tribe, the Lakota, was almost completely exterminated.

Two facts determined the winner: on the one hand, the technical superiority in terms of armament was evident. The invention of the repetition rifle and the automatic machine gun caused few soldiers to face hundreds of Indians.

On the other hand,  the systematic extermination of buffaloes was even more decisive. Buffaloes were the main source of food and raw materials of Indian societies. So, as they began running out of food, they ended up surrendering by hunger or by signing any type of agreement.

it was certainly a debatable decision, mainly because it was based primarily on political - and not on legal or social - views. since the congress at that time was led by members of the republican party, and the territory that the tribes wanted to turn into an exclusively indian state was predominantly democratic, the proposal (as expressed in the constitution) did not succeed, but the constitution itself proved to be of crucial importance in the creation of the state of oklahoma, and, most importantly, it guaranteed the involvement of representatives of the indian tribes in the government of the future joint state.  

as a member of congress, i would have voted to ratify the constitution, or at least to have it tabled. ignoring it was an interested and partial decision.
