b. The gold for salt trade - The gold mines of West Africa offered great wealth to West African Empires like Ghana and Mali. The main items that were traded included gold and salt. This trade helped Ghana come to control not only gold and salt but also the trade routes passing through their land. As a result, Ghana became very rich  from the trade between West and North Africa.
