James Watt was a mechanical engineer, Scottish inventor and chemist. The improvements he made to the Newcomen machine gave rise to what is known as a water steam machine, which would be fundamental in the development of the first Industrial Revolution, both in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world.

While working as an instrument maker at the University of Glasgow, Watt became interested in the technology of steam engines and realized that contemporary designs wasted a large amount of energy by repeatedly cooling and heating the cylinder. Watt introduced an improvement in the design, the separate condenser, which avoided the loss of energy and radically improved the power, efficiency and profitability of steam engines. Finally it adapted this motor to produce a rotary movement, which greatly extended its use beyond the simple pumping of water.
