The Spanish American War (1898) started as a conflict between Spain and Cuba, which was seeking for its independence. The US decided to intervene after the chaos generated by the explosion of the cruise USS Maine, for which the Spanish were blamed.

The war ended with the defeat of the Spanish and the independence of Cuba. Spain and the US signed the Treaty of Paris in 1898, to agree on the peace terms. Spain removed its claims over Cuba in that treaty and ceded to the US the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico and Phillipines.

The treaty of Paris meant the end of the Spanish Empire and evidenced the rise of a new worlwide power: the US.
