How did european nations complete for power in the years before world war1

Prior to World War I, European nations would try to gain and control as many colonies as possible in a bid to become a world superpower. The country who succeeded this best was Great Britain which at a certain point controlled the whole of Australia the whole of Northern America, big portions in Africa as well as India.
