Sit-ins were arguably the most valuable tool used by civil rights activists to achieve their goals. All over the country, African-American citizens protested segregation in public places (like restaurants) to expose the inequality present in the US. This type of peaceful protest started with four African-American college students who refused to move from a food counter at a Woolworth's in North Carolina. Despite facing physical violence, these students refused to fight back, showing their constraint. Due to the brave actions of these four men, thousands of African-Americans followed suit all over the country. This caused a change in public restaurants all over the country, as the sit-ins caused business owners to lose a significant amount of money.

The most valuable tool that was used to make the civil rights activities at a larger level in the US in the mid 1960s was case between Plessy v. Ferguson.

This case was one of the most important cases that took place in the US during the mid Twentieth century as it lay a great stress on segregated but equal protection of law for Black people in the US.

The case took place in the Nineteenth century but its effects could be seen late as the states witnessed a strong raise of voice by the African-American people.This case made the US government make amendments in its laws and thereby making special arrangements by the supreme court after the world saw that there is racial discrimination in USA.Despite being called an independent nation the people were not really free. Movements against the President and existing irrational laws were made.

Hence, during the mid 1960s a strong flair of segregated but equal protection of laws could be experienced in the United States of America.
