In the middle of the Balkan area and the need to expand borders, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, Sophie, traveled to Bosnia. 
They were shot in the car and the shooter was part of the Blank Hand.
Austria decided to use the murders as an excuse to punish Serbia.
Serbian leaders tried to come up with peace, but Austria did not want to negotiate.
They declared war and Russian leaders helped Austria at their borders.
