The preamble to the Constitution helps to set up how the entire US government will be run. The famous line of creating a "more perfect union" shows that the founding fathers knew that the constitution they were creating was not perfect and that modifications would need to be made in the future. This idea of a "more perfect union" also addresses the fact that the US is improving their constitution based on the mistakes they made with the Articles of Confederation.

The Articles of Confederation was the first US Constitution. However, this system of government that was created right after the American Revolution ended was extremely flawed. There was no common currency among states, no ability for the federal government to collect taxes, and no president. This system worked terrible and was replaced by our current constitution after a little less than a decade.
