Through the Silk Road, merchants supplied extensive amount of silk in Europe in the medieval period.  In Asia, under admiral Zheng He, China conducted trade in south Asia by exporting silk and porcelain in return for other goods. Silk during the early period considered to be a luxury item and worn by the high class of people, including kings, nobles, etc. The process of making silk along with its fine glossy texture earned its reputation as one of the luxury items.
