Nine young black men were accused of raping two white women on a train near Scottsboro, Alabama, in 1931. The men were convicted and were sentenced to be executed, but protests in the US and internationally exposed the racism of the legal system and helped to get the conviction overturned.  

What had actually happened was that the nine men had been illegally on board a freight train, intending to travel to look for work.  They were arrested, and then deputies from Scottsboro pressured two white women to say that they were raped by these young black men.  

The conviction of the "Scottsboro boys" was overturned by the US Supreme Court in 1937.
