What additional purpose did forts, such as fort gibson and fort towson, serve after the indian removal act was passed in 1830?

Fort Gibson and Fort Towson became garrisons (a place where troops are stationed to defend a city or town).  The soldiers at these forts were there to deal with the Native Americans and guarded the American frontier in Indian Territory.  Fort Gibson was built to maintain peace on the frontier.
