The man who came up with the idea of the "silent majority" was Richard Nixon. He was also the winner of the 1968 presidential election.

According to Nixon, the "silent majority" was a group of individuals who still supported the United States war efforts in Vietnam. Nixon felt that these individuals were being overpowered by the thousands of American citizens/college students who were protesting all over the US about our involvement in the Vietnam War. Nixon claimed that more people supported the war then opposed it. The only reason it felt differently was because of the amount of news coverage the protests were getting.
