Why might knowledge of the compass have allowed the chinese to have been, at one time, a major sea power?

The  knowledge of the compass have allowed the Chinese to have been, at one time, a major sea power because since they knew where they were going and could effectively explore, even in the untamed sea. Every other person just cruised until the hit something, yet they had no clue where they were.

River valleys were good places for hunting and fishing.
