Compare and contrast the position united states and the soviet union postion regarding the post-war world?

After World War II, the US and Soviet Union emerged as global superpowers. However, they had two very different goals.

1) America wanted to spread democracy/capitalism- After World War II, the US implemented several different laws to spread American ideals such as democracy and capitalism. This was done through the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plans. These two laws helped in providing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of aid to countries in Western Europe that were suffering after World War II. Along with this, the US was trying to stop the spread of communism. This policy is known as containment.

2) Soviet Union wanted to expand their power/territory- The Soviet Union wanted to continue to develop their power and influence in the Eastern part of Europe. They did this by establishing communist governments in countries such as Romania and Albania. These countries would become known as "satellite nations" and joined with the Soviet Union through an alliance known as the Warsaw Pact.
