The population in Oklahoma was predominantly Christian and fundamentalist.  Even today, almost 80% of Oklahomans identify as Christian and about half the state's population falls under what is termed "Evangelical Protestantism."  So, speaking in the language of the Bible was a natural approach for the early 20th century socialists in Oklahoma.  They pointed to the teachings of Jesus as expressed in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7) as supporting the sort of sharing community socialism espoused, and some even said that Jesus was the first socialist. 

In the 1914 elections, the Socialist Party candidate for governor in Oklahoma got 20% of the vote.  Socialism played a strong role in state politics during those early decades of the 20th century.
