The most difficult part of the journey westward for settlers was

Long journey across unknown terrains. They faced harsh conditions, weather wise, supplies wise, etc. due to little to no settlers where they were heading. Loss of cattle due to lack of water. They overloaded their wagons at the towns they knew they could get supplies. Poorly marked trails.
