This military force was called the Red Guards. Groups of Red Guards traveled from city to city to hold marches, demonstrations and to eliminate the customs and traditional thoughts of the old China. Some of the members of the group beat gongs and drums when Red Guard units were to search homes to “Destroy the Old Four” – old ideas, old culture, old customs and old habits. Several hundred thousand people died in the course of these persecutions and by 1967 Red Guard units had overthrown party authorities.
