1)  The main purpose of election is to give people a choice of selecting their representatives, the policies they prefer etc

2)  It is necessary to have open discussion of these policies which helps the people decide as to which party should govern them and this is known as campaigns

3)  In India, such campaigns take place for a 2 week period between the announcement of the final list of candidates and the date of polling.

4) During this period, the contestants contact their voters, political leaders address election meetings, etc

5)  Mass media like newspapers, television, radio telecast news about election related stories and also conducts debates

6)  Some political parties give attractive slogans that focus on their policies to attract voters to their side
