In Unit 2, we have learned of various government, law, and public service careers that all help make our world a better place. Why did Melvin Russell choose to become a police officer? What do you think he means when he says, “…it has always been a calling for me, never a job.” 2. Russell states that he has been through good times and bad over the years of being a police officer, but that he still loves the job. What aspect of being a police officer caused him to almost retire? What outside factors might impact the amount of racism and discrimination that police officers deal with?

3. Russell was determined to make a big change in the thought process behind police officer roles in communities. What were some of the first steps he took to achieve this change?
