Jeff takes his expensive blazer to Laundry Ltd. to be dry-cleaned. Jeff has had his suits dry-cleaned by Laundry Ltd. on numerous previous occasions. On the wall of the laundry is a notice which purports to exempt Laundry Ltd. from liability "for any damage done to items left to be cleaned".

Jeff has never given this notice any thought even though he has read it.

On this occasion, however, Jeff enquires of the attendant as to its meaning. She tells him that it is simply a warning to customers to check the washing instructions for their items of clothing.

Jeff hands over his blazer and then signs a receipt for the blazer. On the back of the receipt is a single paragraph labelled "CONDITIONS" which states:

"Laundry Ltd. does not accept any liability for any damage caused to any item. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that any special laundering instructions are drawn to the attention of Laundry Ltd. before the item is handed over to Laundry Ltd."

Advise Jeff who now informs you that when he went to pick up his blazer yesterday he noticed that a button was missing and that the lining of the blazer was torn.
