Its helpful to break the 9 and the y apart when solving this and bring them back at the end. The expression then becomes (square root of 9) * (square root of y).

The square root of 9 can be simplified to 3. 

The square root of y cannot be simplified but can be written in a form such that it becomes y^(1/2). The square root of any number is equal to that same number to the 1/2 power. 

When you combine the terms back together, you are left with 3 * y^(1/2).
