the yellow and green rectangles are mostly inside area, and can be compensated by some of the small sections outside the rectangles themselves.

the yellow rectangle is a 5x4 so it has an area of 20 units and the green rectangle is a 4x3 rectangle with an area of 12 units, for a combined area of 20 + 12 = 32 square units.

the part of the figure that is outside of both of those rectangles, we can more or less use "some" of it to complete the red rectangles above, which are 5 for 5 units.

combining the yellow, green and red rectangles, we get a 32 +5 = 37 squared units estimate.
