student experiment

materials:

• 2 aluminum trays

• drinking straw

• bag of soil

• section of sod

• timer/stopwatch

lab instructions:

1. pour soil into an aluminum tray provided by your teacher.

2. pack the soil to a height of 5 cm in both trays.

3. cut the sod to fit in one tray over the soil.

4. set both trays flat on the counter and tap the bottom several times to settle the materials.

5. blow over the tray containing soil for 1 minute (have a group member time you).

6. after one minute, make observations of any changes and record in data table.

7. repeat procedures for the tray with sod. imagine this experiment duplicating real-world situations. give a real-world example for each tray that is a result of human activities.

a) farmed land (soil tray) and un-farmed land (sod tray)

b) desert (soil tray) and tropical rain forest (sod tray)
