For many years, scientists have been studying living things. All living things are made of cells. Many scientists focused on studying only cells and determined that cells were the basic units of life. Evidence for this was provided by the large amount of unicellular organisms in existence. Scientists such as Pasteur did further studies on cells that disproved the theory of spontaneous generation and supported the idea that cells came from preexisting cells.
