The graph shows the salaries of 23 employees at a small company. Each bar spans a width of $50,000 and the height shows the number of people whose salaries fall into that interval.
The owner is looking to hire one more person and when the company is interviewing prospective employees he claims that an average employee makes around $125,000.
How does the company justify this claim?
A) The company's claim is incorrect. Since the highest bar is those that make between $50,000 and $100,000 the average salary would be about $75,000 since that is the mode.
B) Since there is a jump in those that make between $250,000 and $300,000 the median would be pulled up and would be greater than the mean. The company used the mean when making his claim.
C) Since there is a jump in those that make between $250,000 and $300,000 the mean would be pulled up and would be greater than the median. The company used the median when making his claim.
D) The company's claim is wrong. Since salaries range from $50,000 to $450,000 on average an employee should make the midpoint of those values--therefore on average an employee should make at least $250,000.
