Which pair of triangles can be proven congruent by SAS?
2 identical triangles are shown. The triangle is reflected across a line to form the second triangle.
2 identical triangles are shown. The triangle is rotated 90 degrees to form the second triangle.
2 identical triangles are shown. The triangle is reflected across a line and then rotated to form the second triangle.

Here is their argument. given the obtuse angle x, we make a quadrilateral abcd with ∠dab = x, and ∠abc = 90◦, and ad = bc. say the perpendicular bisector to dc meets the perpendicular bisector to ab at p. then pa = pb and pc = pd. so the triangles pad and pbc have equal sides and are congruent. thus ∠pad = ∠pbc. but pab is isosceles, hence ∠pab = ∠pba. subtracting, gives x = ∠pad−∠pab = ∠pbc −∠pba = 90◦. this is a preposterous conclusion – just where is the mistake in the "proof" and why does the argument break down there?

The lengths of two sides of a right triangle are given. find the length of the third side. round to the nearest tenth if necessary. a) y = 12/5x + 39/5 b) y = 5/12x + 5/39 c) y = 12/5x - 39/5 d) y = 5/12x - 5/39
