Toucans can eat fruits with large seeds because their large bills can open very wide. Most other birds in the same forest can only eat small seeds. Ecologist Mauro Galetti and his colleagues measured the seed sizes of palms in forest fragments with and without toucans. The graphs show two of the forest populations they studied. Do these data illustrate directional, stabilizing, disruptive, or balancing selection? There are 2 bar charts in the figure, representing the number of seeds for various seed diameters. The number of seeds is measured from 0 to 90 on the y-axis, and seed diameter is measured from 0 to 14 millimeters on the x-axis. The first bar chart represents the number of seeds when toucans are present, and the second bar chart when toucans are absent. When the toucans are present, fruits have 6 seeds and the size of a seed is 7 millimeters, then the number of seeds varies from 30 to 20 with their diameter from 10 to 14 millimeters, and there are approximately 11 seeds in a fruit when each seed is 14 millimeters in diameter. When the toucans are absent, the seed diameter varies from 0 to 8 and from 11 to 12 millimeters, and there will be less than 10 of them per fruit. When the diameter is 9 millimeters, the number of seeds is 20 per fruit, and when the size varies from 9 to 11 millimeters, the number of seeds will be from 90 to 70.
