If you are using algebra tiles to factor a trinomial of the
form ax? + bx + c, when would you need to bring in zero
pairs? Why?
If the value of c is negative. you would need zero pairs to model the factorization
of the polynomial
Sample Response: If the value of c is negative, you
would need zero pairs to model the factorization of t1
polynomial. The x-tiles on the board determine what
the constants are in the factors. The product of these
constants is equal to the value of c, so you would need
positive tiles on one side of the x-squared tile and
negative x-tiles on the other side to have opposite sig
on the constants. Opposite signs on the constants will
result in a negative value for c when multiplying the
factors.
What did you include in your response? Check allt
apply.
If the value of c is negative, then you would nee
zero pairs to model the factorization of the
polynomial.
You would need both positive and negative x-til

Here is their argument. given the obtuse angle x, we make a quadrilateral abcd with ∠dab = x, and ∠abc = 90◦, and ad = bc. say the perpendicular bisector to dc meets the perpendicular bisector to ab at p. then pa = pb and pc = pd. so the triangles pad and pbc have equal sides and are congruent. thus ∠pad = ∠pbc. but pab is isosceles, hence ∠pab = ∠pba. subtracting, gives x = ∠pad−∠pab = ∠pbc −∠pba = 90◦. this is a preposterous conclusion – just where is the mistake in the "proof" and why does the argument break down there?
