1. Professor J has been going crazy during the quarantine, and has decided to put up some new outdoor decorations to her house. She has a ladder which she knows must be at least 3 feet away from the wall in order to be stable. How far away from the base of her house will she need to put her 15-foot ladder so that it reaches exactly 12 feet up the wall? Will the ladder be stable enough for her to use? Answer in complete sentences. (Hint: Draw a picture and label a triangle.)

2.,in her boredom, built a playpen for her pet hedgehog Russell. Upon being in a new place, Russell spent lots of time running along the edge of the playpen. In watching him, Professor J wondered just how far Russell was running. She realized she could plot the four corners of Russell’s new space on a graph at the following points:
A (2,3) B (6, 0) C (2, -3) D (-2, 0)
Calculate the distance Russell will run in a single lap of the playpen. Graph the points and draw a simple picture of the situation.

Arrange the steps to solve this system of linear equations in the correct sequence. x + y = -2 2x – 3y = -9 tiles subtract 3x + 3y = -6 (obtained in step 1) from 2x – 3y = -9 (given) to solve for x. substitute the value of x in the first equation (x + y = -2) to get y = 1. the solution for the system of equations is (-3, 1). x = -15 the solution for the system of equations is (-15, 13). add 3x + 3y = -6 (obtained in step 1) to 2x – 3y = -9 (given), and solve for x. x = -3 substitute the value of x in the first equation (x + y = -2) to get y = 13. multiply the first equation by 3: 3(x + y) = 3(-2) 3x + 3y = -6.
