A machine produces ball bearings with diameters that have a normal distribution with known standard deviation of 0.04 centimeters. Ball bearings with diameters that are too small or too large are undesirable. The machine is out of calibration if the machine's average output differs from 0.50 cm. Assume that a technician randomly samples 25 bearings which had a mean diameter of 0.51 centimeters.

The technician wants to perform a hypothesis test to determine whether the machine is out of calibration. State the appropriate null and alternate hypotheses.

A) H0: μ ≠ 0.50, H1: μ = 0.50

B) H0: μ = 0.50, H1: μ ≠ 0.50

C) H0: μ = 0.50, H1: μ > 0.50

D) H0: μ = 0.50, H1: μ < 0.50
