F someone tells us that a random variable is described by a Binomial or Poisson distribution, it becomes a very simple matter (presuming we know the key parameters) to be able to then predict the likelihood that any particular combination of values will be seen in a dataset containing that variable. Sometimes, though, we don’t know what kind of distribution our variable will fit, or we don’t know enough to be able to identify the key parameters needed to make accurate predictions. Part of the analysis we routinely do with datasets is to identify whether or not any of the variables included are Binomial or Poisson in nature. Discuss why it can be helpful to do this? Discuss how you would identify which variables in the dataset would benefit from such analysis. Does it provide benefit to name the distribution that applies even if you can't precisely identify the needed parameters for that distribution?

Asmall (but heavy) particle placed in a glass of water will follow a zigzag motion because the particle will bounce off of the water molecules it meets. this is called brownian motion. a physicist simulates this on a computer, by varying the distance a particle can travel (called the mean free length), on average, before it collides with a water molecule and assigning the change in motion to be one of 8 directions, each with a similar probability. by running the simulated particle (with the same mean free length) many times she determines that it should take 15 seconds, on average, for the particle to fall to the bottom, with a standard deviation of 1.5 seconds. next she lets a real particle fall through a glass of water and finds that it took 18 seconds. what does she conclude, and why?

The label on the car's antifreeze container claims to protect the car between ? 40°c and 125°c. to convert celsius temperature to fahrenheit temperature, the formula is c = 5 over 9 (f ? 32). write and solve the inequality to determine the fahrenheit temperature range at which this antifreeze protects the car. ? 40 > 5 over 9 (f ? 32) > 125; ? 40 > f > 257 ? 40 < 5 over 9 (f ? 32) < 125; ? 40 < f < 257 ? 40 < 5 over 9 (f ? 32); ? 40 < f 5 over 9 (f ? 32) < 125; f < 257
