2. Dr. Smith arrived home from work one day and found that his favorite maple tree was lying
in his front yard. The smooth, clean cut on the tree and the tree stump indicated that it was not
the wind or a storm, but instead was a deliberate act that brought the tree down. He knew his
next door neighbor Lizzy did not like the tree because it blocked the sunlight that her garden
needed. He also saw a hatchet sitting next to her garage door. He accused Lizzy of cutting
down his tree.
You, however, decide to come to Lizzy's defense. You know two facts: 1) A hatchet does not
leave a smooth, clean cut. Only a chainsaw does. 2) Lizzy does not know how to use a
chainsaw
Produce a clear, step by step logical argument based on these facts that proves that Lizzy did
not cut down the maple tree. Start by assuming that Lizzy did cut the tree down and use an
indirect proof that clearly shows a contradiction
