Fortunately for you, summer is fast approaching and now is your opportunity to work and raise money. Your parents have agreed to help you purchase a used car (Links to an external site.) between $9,000 - $12,000; however, they have asked for your help. You will need to contribute 35% of the price of the car and they will pay for the rest. You have just been hired at a local business which is open 7 days a week for the 12 weeks of summer. You need to determine the number of hours on average you would need to work during the week and on the weekend in order to reach your contribution goal. The table below shows the pay rates for your new job:
monday-friday 7.30 per hour
weekend 13.5 per hour
You plan to work 40 hours a week for the entire summer and will save all of the money you earn to put towards your car contribution; however you are NOT expected to work every day. Also, be aware that the company does not schedule students more than 8 hours a day.

Your parents have asked that you provide them with a written plan including the car you are purchasing, it’s cost, and a detailed explanation for how you will earn your portion of the cost of the car. Your parents aren’t easily convinced and will want to see how you came up with these numbers and proof that your calculations are accurate.

Your parents are excited about this opportunity and are anxious to hear what decisions you have made. Happy shopping!
