Understanding how decimal places are named

1 is the hundreds place

2 is the tens place

3 is the ones place

4 is the tenths place (This is where decimals start which is in reverse

5 is the hundredth's place

6 is the thousandths

Well lets say we have a number of 444.444, to know which place its in, divide each part by 4 and we can make a cheat sheet that your teacher probably didnt give you. Using it, you'll understand why we call the decimal places what we do.

Cheat Sheet:

|400.000/4 = 100.000 = 100's

|  40.000/4 =    10.000 =   10's

    4.000/4 =      1.000 =     1's

|    0.400/4 =     0.100  = 1/10's       (Tenth's)

    0.040/4 =     0.010  = 1/100's    (Hundreth's)

    0.004/4 =     0.001  = 1/1000's (Thousandth's)
