Here given are,

X+Y=7, let's say it is formula 1 in order to make it kinda convenient and easy to understand.

And X-Y=10, let's mark it as 2

Now, see formula 1 can be also written as,

X=7-Y, Let's mark it as 3

Now, put the value of X of formula no.3 to formula no.2, that will pretty much look like this, 7-Y-Y=10 and after simplifying this whole Y thing you get Y=-1.5 can also be written in a rational form - 3/2. Put this value of Y in any of the above given marked formulas, just for my convenience I'm putting this value in formula no. 1 i. e, X +Y=7 after putting the value of y in this formula it will look like this :

X-1.5=7 after simply simplifying this formula we get X=8.5.

Tad, so the value of X is 8.5 and Y is - 1.5.

If you are not sure whether the answer is correct or not just try to put the both the values in one of the formulas,

It will be, 8.5 - (-1.5) =10

8.5+1.5 =10(since, 2 - ve forms a positive)
