How can i explain to my daughter how to answer this

Say you have 237 gummy bears and you want to share them amongst 11 people.

First you need to figure out how many times 11 can go into (multiplied into) 237

11 x 11 = 121
And keep multiplying 11 until you get to 237 if you go over or under that is ok your answer will just be the closest to that number just make sure you do not go over with your answer because then the answer won’t be correct.

Take this problem for an example 11 can only go into 237 two times

No you need to multiply

2 x 11 = 22

Now that you have 22 you need to bring down what we call an invisible zero. There is no zero in the question but you still need to bring it down to 22 and turn it into 220.

Now you can subtract 237

220 - 237 = 17

Now that you have 17 you just repeat the first step and find how many times 11 can go into 17

11 x 11 = 22

The answer is 22 if you multiply twice which is over 17 so 11 can only go into 17 once.

So what is,
1 x 11 =

1 x 11 = 11

So now that you have you are a partial quotient 17. You can subtract 17 by 11

17 - 11 = 6

Six cannot go into 11 because it is less than 11 so your quotient (answer) will be

21 Remainder 6
