Michael and Christopher were supposed to add up the terms of the geometric sequence 1,3,9,…,3^20
and then find the remainder when divided by 40.

Michael did the question correctly and got the answer M, but Christopher took the remainders of each term separately and then added all these remainders up to get the incorrect answer C. What is C−M?
