The Law of Superposition states that in any undisturbed sediment, younger strata will be on top der strata. Consequently, artifacts found in deeper sediments will be older than those deposited in younger sediments. This basic principle is used in stratigraphic dating, whereby profiles from one site or portion of a site are compared with profiles from another. By examining stratigraphic sequences from neighboring sites, it is possible to determine the relative sequence in which the strata were deposited. Artifacts found within each layer can then be relatively dated. Relative techniques are often used alongside absolute techniques to better understand the age of ancient remains. Examine the following list of strata from 4 sites and determine the order in which the strata were deposited. List the strata from youngest to oldest below. Remember: strata may be missing from a site if it was not occupied at that point in time or space!
