Directions
Read the instructions for the following activities and type in your responses. At the end of the lesson, click the link to open the Student Answer Sheet. Use the answers or sample responses to evaluate your own work.

Activity
Tyler needs to get the windows in his new home cleaned. The cleaning company needs to know the total number of window panes before it can tell him how much the job will cost. There are 12 windows, each with four window panes across and four window panes down. Tyler can find the total number of window panes by multiplying the number of windows by the number of panes in each window. The total number of window panes is an expression with a whole-number exponent.

Part A
Write an expression with exponents to find the total number of panes in 12 windows.

Part B
Which operation should you perform first in the expression 12 × 42?

Part C
Which operation should you perform last in the expression 12 × 42?

Part D
Write the expression 12 × 42 in words.

Part E
Tyler also wants to paint the walls of his home. He buys 6 packages of paint rollers, each of which contains 6 paint rollers. How many paint rollers are there in all? Write your answer as an exponential expression.

Part F
Tyler buys 3 cans that each contain 3 quarts of blue paint, and he buys 1 can that contains 2 quarts of white paint. What is the total quantity of paint in quarts? Write your answer as a numerical expression with exponents.

Part G
Which operation should you perform first when evaluating the expression 32 + 2?

Part H
Which operation should you perform last in the expression 32 + 2?

Part I
Write the expression two-cubed times seven as a numerical expression.

Part J
Which operation should you perform first in the expression 7 × 23?

Self-Evaluation
How did you do? Rate your work on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest score. Then write a brief evaluation of your work below. Note what you learned and what challenged you.
